Successful Changing Places installation

So the finally you have agreed the drawings, chosen the equipment, selected the floor coverings and decided on a colour scheme, now comes the interesting bit – getting it installed!

When it comes to managing the installation of a Changing Places there are some important points to consider, follow these simple rules and all will be well.

  1. Check your contractors credentials – the key registrations to look for are
    1.  CHAS The Contractors health and safety Scheme independently vets contractors Health and Safety policy and procedures to ensure they operat in a safe manner with due diligence for managing risk.
    2. CONSTRUCTIONLINE A contractor management portal that vets all aspects of a company performance including financial performance.
    3. ISO 9001 Ensures that the contractor has suitable Quality Management systems and procedures in place.
  2. But – Do not be fooled by the badge! – There have been a substantial number of cases of bogus builders fraudulently claiming membership of trade associations, so call and make sure they are a bona fide member.
  3. Check that the contractor has up to date insurance that covers the works being carried out. As a minimum this should be Public and Products Liability, and Employers Liability insurance.
  4. Get references – Check and visit them. Contact the people who provided the references and find out how happy they were with the quality of the workmanship and the contractors conduct.
  5. Check what is included in the quote. This should include site maintenance, clearance, material supplies etc. Ask for confirmation as to whether planning permission is required and if they will need to apply for Building Regulations approval.
  6. Check on your contractors awareness of the CDM Regulations. Are they protecting you? Are they fulfilling their duties under the regulations?
  7. Put details of the job down in writing – The more thorough the better. Your contract should outline what work is to be done, start/completion dates, security, safety, the cost of the work and materials, payment plans, catering and lavatory arrangements, hours of work, cleaning up and disposal of waste materials.
  8. Payment Terms – Agree payment terms clearly in writing with your builder.
  9. Avoid paying upfront or a cash deposit – It should not be needed unless you request specialist building materials or the job is likely to take a long time to complete.
  10. Guarantees – Are they offering a guarantee on a large scale job? What does the guarantee include?
  11. If the work is to take place in a public area check that adequate measure are taken to protect the public from harm. This may include barriers, temporary walkways and even temporary partitions.
