When installing ceiling hoists we are often asked the question – how do you take the track through the doorway? There are several ways, read on for more details….
The preferred option is to cut a slot in the header of the door frame for the track to pass through. This means that when the door is closed, the top of the door closes flush against the track with a 3 mm gap. This option looks incredibly neat and tidy and reduces the transfer of noise between rooms. If the track is running from a bedroom to an en-suite, the transfer of moisture and odours is also minimised.
Design considerations
It is also possible to take a track through the header of a sliding door, however a specialist sliding door frame is required. Close liaison is needed between the door frame installer and the hoist installer, to ensure a seamless and smooth installation, and a high quality finish.
If you are considering a sliding door with a ceiling hoist track, please contact us to discuss in more details.
An alternative option is to cut out the header of the door and remove an aperture large enough for the hoist to pass through. This has the advantage that the door frame does not have to be full height, however a large aperture is required for the hoist to pass through.
Design considerations
We are often asked if hoist tracks are fire rated, and the short answer is no! the reason being that the two rooms connected by the hoist, are usually running from bedroom to en-suite, and are therefore in the same fire compartment.
Please contact us if you would like to discuss fire ratings in more detail – we would be delighted to assist.
