How changing places for Zoos can increase revenue

27th April 2018

Changing places for Zoos – a guaranteed revenue stream.

With over 1.2 million wheelchair users in the UK (source NHS England), changing places for Zoos present a key opportunity to open up access to an expanding market. Over 20% of wheelchair users (source http://www.changing-places.org) need personal assistance to use the toilet or change continence pads. What is often forgotten is that each wheelchair user will also bring at least one attendant, and frequently several friends or family members, which can significantly increase off-peak footfall by a structured pricing strategy.

What is a Changing Places Room?

Changing Places Rooms have proved to be a game changer in opening up access possibilities for persons with disabilities to multiple nation-wide destinations, leisure facilities and public buildings. They provide a private and secure environment for the provision of personal care for persons with special needs, more than can be provided by a standard Doc M toilet. A changing places toilet would include as a minimum

  • Hoist for transferring disabled users – Ideally a ceiling hoist, alternatively a mobile hoist.
  • Large disabled access wash basin – preferably adjustable height, although a fixed height version can be used
  • WC with side support rails – for luxury installations, an automatic toilet can be fitted
  • Adjustable-height changing bench – the can either be wall mounted, or mobile
  • TMV3 thermostatically controlled shower
  • Privacy screen – either ceiling mounted or mobile
  • Associated grab rails
  • Space is required for the user and up to two carers, enough to enable wheelchair manoeuvrability.

Where can they be installed?

The key word here is convenience. What is required is level access and a minimum distance for the user to travel; apart from that there is little requirement. A Changing Places room is recommended to be no more than 12m² If current internal space is at a premium, a modular Changing Places Room can be positioned anywhere power, water and waste are available, preferably near to the disabled parking provision. A modular Changing Places unit will be completely pre fitted and commissioned very quickly. Multicare will conduct a complete survey enabling a seamless installation.

How much does it cost?

Refitting an existing room to Changing Places standards can cost from as little  as £10,000; specialists such as Multicare will work with contractors undertaking work to provide as little or as much equipment is required, or can provide a bespoke turnkey solution in a minimal timeframe. Changing Places for Zoos provide a great opportunity to increase footfall, they exert a powerful attraction for many carers who struggle with care provision for their charges!
